Hazardous Waste Supervisor
Season: Austral Summer (Oct – Feb)Location: McMurdo Station, AntarcticaDepartment: Six Mile, LLC Antarctica
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate with the Hazardous Waste Manager to set department priorities.
Ensure all incoming employees receive proper training and maintain a training log.
Coordinate with other departments to ensure efficient pickup and processing of hazardous waste.
Daily tasking and supervision of the department.
Assist with writing mid‑season and post‑season evaluation for the crew.
Attend weekly meetings in the event of Hazardous Waste Manager’s absence.
Conduct community waste briefs or informational sessions when necessary.
Troubleshoot and elevate issues to Hazardous Waste Manager.
Pick up hazardous waste and associated paperwork, ensuring quality of information on the Hazardous Waste Identification Sheet (HWIS).
Process waste: marking, labeling, weighing, storing drums/items into shipping containers, and updating HWIS.
Use appropriate PPE, drum dolly, pallet jack, banding equipment, power tools, shovels, and other tools.
Perform classification qualitative testing (pH, flash‑point, etc.).
Lab packing, safe operation of the M4K (Pickle), accurate data entry into the hazardous waste tracking database.
Quality‑check all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediately.
Follow JHA’s and update them when necessary.
Assist the Solid Waste Department as required.
During vessel and tanker operations: work 12‑hour shifts day or night; active member of the Spill Response Team; on call 24 hrs for approximately one week each month; supply manual labor; write spill reports if applicable.
Perform constant physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs, reaching, and gripping.
Adhere to SOPs and waste departmental responsibilities.
Work in a diverse team, self‑motivated in a physically challenging environment (90 % outdoor).
Maintain flexibility and a positive attitude in a fast‑paced setting.
Support Operations Division metrics, ASC metrics, and comply with ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance requirements.
Provide documentation to ensure legal compliance across divisions.
Work to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments; maintain a safe workplace and ensure safety is the highest priority.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
2 years (or Ice seasons) of waste management experience.
College degree (or 2 additional years of experience substitute).
Strong computer software experience.
Ability to lift 50 lbs consistently and wear a respirator.
Valid driver’s license and passport.
Ability to pass background check and drug screening; elevated Background Investigation (EBI) required prior to deployment.
1 year of hazardous materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience OR 2 years of environmental remediation experience.
1 year of supervisory experience.
1 quarter of college General Chemistry (or a college degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science).
OSHA HazWOPER 40‑Hour certification (current).
Familiarity with power tools, machinery, and equipment operating experience.
US citizenship or permanent residency and passport required.
