Overview
We’re actively recruiting for immediate vacancies in our Special Operations Group (SOG) – a dynamic and disciplined team committed to excellence in emergency response and operational support. Responsibilities

Apply your exceptional communication skills to resolve conflict across diverse and complex situations.
Maintain peak physical and mental fitness to ensure safe and effective emergency response.
Operate as part of a highly trained team undertaking critical roles, including:

Responding to major incidents
Delivering operational and emergency response training
Providing perimeter security
Conducting searches
Escorting high-security and specialist individuals

Eligibility Requirements

Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or have permanent residency status within Australia
Possess a current, unrestricted Australian C or C-A class driver’s license
Have a Working with Children Check (or obtain one prior to appointment)
Meet all requirements to be added to the Department of Justice corporate firearms license
Must not have previously submitted an unsuccessful re-engagement application or had their employment terminated from a custodial role within the Department
Have a valid first aid HLTAID011 qualification (or be willing to undertake and/or renew necessary accreditation prior to appointment)

You must also meet strict medical, physical, and psychological screening standards.
Part of this process requires you to successfully complete a Pre-Selection Test on one day between Tuesday 10 February 2026 and Thursday 12 February 2026. The attached Guide will assist you in preparing for this.
If appointed, new SOG officers must successfully complete all mandatory foundation training and assessment requirements upon engagement. In addition, SOG Officers are required to undertake ongoing learning and development activities to maintain a satisfactory level of skills, knowledge and fitness as required of the position.

During The Application Process, We Require You To Submit

A current, comprehensive resume/CV that highlights your suitability for this position in the context of the selection criteria in the Job Description Form.
The details of two referees who are your current or recent direct line supervisor or manager.

Additionally, you will be asked to provide detailed responses (up to 250 words per question) to the two online application questions below:

Provide an example of when you worked with others to manage a challenging situation. What actions did you take to assess risks, make sound decisions, and respond appropriately?
Tell us about a time when you had to communicate clearly with others. How did you change your approach to suit the people you were talking to and make sure things stayed calm and respectful?

It is important you include examples and provide as much information as you can regarding your skills, knowledge, and abilities. This is a highly competitive process, and your response and CV will be evaluated during the shortlisting phase.

Pool Recruitment
There are 18 positions available. This pool will be open for a period of twelve months, during which time recommended applicants can be considered for positions if and when they arise. A successful application and placement in the SOG appointment pool does not guarantee an offer of employment. Applicants found suitable in this pool, may be considered for subsequent, similar vacancies at similar locations, with the Department of Justice for the duration of the pool.
