Along with our partner, we’re looking for a Principal Database Engineer who can serve as the technical leader for our SQL Server–focused engineering team. This person should be the team’s strongest expert in SQL Server development, performance engineering, and operational reliability — and equally strong in designing
data‐centric solutions that balance correctness, performance, maintainability, and business constraints.
The ideal candidate brings deep, hands‐on mastery of SQL Server internals and can connect engine
behavior to real‐world workload patterns. They should be able to diagnose, design, enhance, and
optimize database solutions at scale, and guide others in doing the same.
You will collaborate with engineering, product, and business stakeholders to ensure requirements are
well‐understood, technically feasible, and aligned with long‐term architectural goals.
Essential Duties:
* Database Design and Development: Guide the evolution and improvement of database architecture, design and implementations. Apply expert‐level understanding of relational modeling, T‐SQL, indexing strategies, and SQL Server engine behavior to build systems that scale and perform under real‐world workloads.
* Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Continuously assess system performance at both the instance and query level. Diagnose and remediate issues, including those involving poor execution plans, parameter sniffing, bad cardinality estimation, SARGability obstacles, inadequate or incorrect indexing, and concurrency issues involving locking, blocking, and/or deadlocks.
* Engineering Solution Design: Break down complex data and workload problems, identify multiple viable solution paths, and evaluate them against functional and non‐functional requirements. Clearly articulate tradeoffs, recommend, and justify the best approach.
* Collaboration with Development Teams: Partner closely with application and service teams to ensure database designs support application behavior, performance goals, and operational constraints. Provide guidance on query patterns, schema usage, and integration with .NET and cloud services.
* Incident Management: Lead the response to database‐related incidents. Perform root‐cause analysis, implement durable fixes, and improve observability, alerting, and operational readiness.
* Mentorship and Training: Coach and mentor database engineers and developers. Establish and promote best practices in SQL development, performance tuning, and operational excellence.
* Data Security Management: Contribute to the implementation and enforcement of security controls, ensuring protection of sensitive data and compliance with relevant standards.
* Backup, Recovery, and Reliability Engineering: Contribute to the design and management of resilient backup, restore, and disaster‐recovery processes. Help ensure systems are prepared for failure scenarios and can recover predictably.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
* Experience: 10+ years in database engineering, data management, or database administration, with significant hands‐on experience in SQL Server.
* Technical Skills:
* Deep expertise in SQL Server development, performance tuning, and engine internals.
* Strong understanding of indexing, execution plans, statistics, concurrency, and workload behavior.
* Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred), including managed SQL services and related data technologies.
* Proficiency in T‐SQL;
familiarity with C#/.NET services is a plus.
Key Competencies:
* Database Design and Architecture: Ability to design scalable, efficient SQL Server solutions in cloud environments, with strong judgment around schema design, indexing, and workload patterns.
* Performance Tuning and Optimization: Expertise in diagnosing and resolving performance issues at all layers of the SQL Server stack.
* Cloud Technologies: Experience with cloud‐based database services (Azure SQL, Managed Instance, AWS RDS, etc.) and understanding of how cloud infrastructure impacts database design and performance.
* Programming and Engineering Skills: Strong T‐SQL development skills and familiarity with the broader SQL Server ecosystem. Ability to reason about system‐level design and integrate database solutions with application architectures.
* Data Management and Security: Ensure data integrity, enforce security controls, and resolve data‐related issues with precision and accountability.
* Leadership and Collaboration: Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and communicate clearly with cross‐functional partners. Influence architectural direction and foster a culture of engineering excellence.
