C40 and GCoM work closely together on aligned programmes and activities.Position DescriptionGCoM seeks an experienced and strategic Media and Communications Manager to serve as a senior contributor and integral member of the communications team. This role contributes to GCoM's global visibility, supports communications responses for critical issues, and helps deliver the overall communications strategy across high-level events and initiatives. Success requires navigating a complex organisational landscape across core funders, institutional partners, and the GCoM alliance to ensure alignment and connection. The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter with a strong background in media relations and narrative development, including direct experience working in or with city governments.ResponsibilitiesStrategic Communications & LeadershipLeadership Support: Support the GCoM Head of Communications in strategic decision-making and day-to-day operations by conducting landscape research, drafting high-level briefing materials, and contributing to the development of overall organisational positioning.Support the overall GCoM Communications Strategy: Help develop and manage the overarching communications strategy, narrative, and annual work plan, ensuring alignment with GCoM's mission and priorities.Narrative & Key Messaging: Drive development and consistent application of the GCoM narrative.Develop and maintain the key message box for all GCoM spokespeople, including Board members and staff, ensuring message discipline and clarity across platforms.Comms Working Group (C-TWG): Co-facilitate administration and communications for the Comms Working Group, including coordinating meeting schedules, drafting agendas, and summarising key outcomes, with support from the Communications Officer.Media Relations & Issues ManagementProactive Media Engagement: Lead GCoM's media relations efforts, including proactive pitching of stories, thought leadership pieces, and announcements to global and regional media outlets.Strategic Partner Media Coordination: Serve as primary media liaison for funders and partners (e.g., Bloomberg Philanthropies, European Commission, C40 Cities, FGS Global, and the broader GCoM Alliance), coordinating to align on joint strategies, press releases, and announcements; ensure message synchronization during shared initiatives, policy moments, and events.Media Infrastructure: Create and maintain a comprehensive reporter contact list and media database; foster strong relationships with key journalists and media influencers.Proactive media strategy and external messaging: author core messaging and talking points; build relationships with editors and writers to position program stories with target journals.Tracking & Analysis: Track media story placement and coverage; manage and report on media metrics to inform strategy.Crisis Management: Work with the Head of Communications to provide crisis communication responses, statements, and strategies for time-critical external issues to protect GCoM's reputation.Event Communications Planning & ExecutionHigh-Level Event Communications Support: Contribute to planning and execution for high-priority global events (e.g., I4C26, GCoM 10-year anniversary, COP) to ensure seamless delivery.Strategy Development: Create robust communication strategies and concept notes for major events, outlining goals, target audiences, content streams, and media engagement plans.Person Specification5–7 years of experience in a high-level communications role with emphasis on media relations and strategic planning; ideally within nonprofit, climate, or international development sectors.Experience working in or with city governments.Familiarity with climate action, urban sustainability, and/or international organisations.Expertise in proactive media pitching and relationships with international and climate-focused journalists.Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to develop compelling narratives, messages, and formal strategies.Experience in issues management and crisis communication.Leadership qualities with experience supervising and motivating colleagues in a fast-moving international environment.Ability to work effectively across a global team, across cultures and time zones.Fluency in English; proficiency in a second UN language (e.g., Spanish, French) is an advantage.Experience with global organisations; IT skills (Microsoft Office, Zoom, Google Drive); experience in climate finance and working with creative agencies and external suppliers.Other RequirementsApplicants must already have the right to work in the listed locations.Moderate travel will be required.We seek to recruit individuals committed to our organisational values and to the role.BenefitsPaid Time Off: 35 days annually, including all national holidays.Company Shutdowns: Two non-contractual shutdown weeks per year.Parental Leave: Up to 52 weeks of parenting leave; first 16 weeks paid at 100% salary; weeks 17–52 unpaid unless required by law.Flexible Working, TOIL, Sick Leave, Training, EAP, Pension, Private Health Insurance where applicable.Application ProcessClosing date for applications is Friday, 6 March GMT UK Time.
