Linux Cryptography and Security Engineer
Join Canonical as a Linux Cryptography and Security Engineer. This role focuses on building and maintaining the security foundation of Ubuntu, ensuring compliance with international information security standards such as FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria.
Core responsibilities include
Collaborate with the Security Hardening team to achieve and retain security certifications.
Extend and enhance Linux cryptographic components (OpenSSL, Libgcrypt, GnuTLS, and others) for FIPS and CC certification.
Work with external consultants to test and validate kernel and crypto module components.
Develop security hardening benchmarks and audit + remediation automation for Ubuntu.
Contribute to Ubuntu mainline and upstream projects to land solutions.
Communicate and collaborate across Canonical and external partners to improve security posture.
What we are looking for in you
Hands‑on experience with low‑level Linux cryptography APIs and debugging.
Excellent software engineering fundamentals, including C development experience.
Hands‑on experience with Linux system administration and shell scripting.
Knowledge of security and cryptography fundamentals and experience writing secure code.
Experience working with open source libraries.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for remote collaboration.
Additional Skills That You Might Also Bring
Experience with FIPS/Common Criteria certified products and underlying standards.
Experience with DISA‑STIG or CIS benchmarks and related audit tooling.
Experience with the Linux Kernel.
Python, OVAL, and Ansible knowledge.
Open source contributions.
