Core PurposeThe role of the Cover teacher is to teach classes during the absence of other teaching staff. This may be short-notice one-off cover lessons or more extended periods of absence. The post holder will deliver lessons, manage classes of students effectively, provide guidance for the work set by teachers, ensuring that students remain focused, engaged, and make progress during their lesson time. Where subject specialism permits, the cover teacher should play an active role in delivering lesson content, especially if a teacher is on a prolonged absence. This role is pivotal in supporting the continuity of learning within the school and maintaining a positive, orderly learning environment.Reporting LinesOn a day-to-day basis, the cover teacher will receive instructions from the Deputy Head (Academic) who is responsible for allocating cover each morning. They will also be line managed and appraised by the Deputy Head (Academic). When not covering lessons the cover-teacher may be instructed to carry out administrative tasks by the Head of Site or any of the Deputy Heads.RemunerationThe cover Teacher will be remunerated according to the main teacher pay scale.Key Responsibilities1. Class Supervision and Instruction- Teach classes during the absence of the assigned teacher, following the lesson plans provided by the class teacher.- Provide instructions and support to students to complete work as set by the teacher.- Ensure students are following the lesson content, staying on task, and maintaining classroom standards.- Manage classroom behaviour to create a safe, positive, and productive environment.- Engage and motivate students by encouraging positive behaviour and addressing disruptions in line with school policies.- Assist students with any questions or clarifications they may have about the set work, while encouraging independent learning.- Foster an inclusive classroom environment that accommodates the diverse needs of students.- Report any serious behavioural concerns to the relevant pastoral manager.1. Administrative Support- Complete registers and any relevant records promptly and accurately.- Report any issues regarding behaviour or work completion to the appropriate teaching staff or leadership team.- Provide feedback to teachers on students' progress and behaviour after lessons as needed.1. Support for Staff and School Operations- Assist with the supervision of students during school activities, as required, including lunch or break times.- Support other school operations, such as exam invigilation, if necessary.- If not fully allocated to cover lessons, assist with other administrative tasks as allocated by the Deputy Heads or Head of Site. This may include trip admin, academic or pastoral admin.- Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the school.Person SpecificationEssential:- Recognised teaching qualification (Brazilian or international)- Fluency in English- Experience working with the 11-18 age group.Desirable:- Interest in and ability to cover lessons across a variety of subject areas.- Good communication skills.- A calm, authoritative presence.- Ability to manage student behaviour and handle challenging situations calmly and professionally.- Good organisational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to work independently.- Adaptability, with the ability to step into a range of subject areas and class sizes as needed.
