Ubuntu Engineering Lead

We are hiring engineering leaders to work across the breadth of our Ubuntu Engineering organization, building high‑performing engineering teams and delivering quality, performance and resilience in software.

Remote roles open in every time zone.
Key Responsibilities
Own the technical roadmap and lead the team in designing, building and shipping high‑quality, performant software in Rust, Go and Python.
Drive the Linux developer and user experience, optimizing the distribution for performance, reliability and security.
Plan, estimate and execute software projects, working with product management to define vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
Lead technical delivery, conduct code reviews, design architecture and ensure sound engineering principles.
Develop and coach team members, providing mentoring, technical feedback and career development.
Collaborate with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
Contribute to upstream and neighbouring open source projects; build a thriving community within the broader open source ecosystem.
Debug complex system‑level issues and deliver robust solutions.
Author and improve technical and community documentation.
Qualifications
Strong technical leadership experience and background in software engineering.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent, with an exceptional academic record.
Previous experience leading engineering teams and coaching high‑performing engineers.
Passion for open source software; significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++.
Professional written and spoken English, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each.
Nice‑to‑have Skills
Experience contributing to or leading open source projects.
Experience with Linux distributions, distribution engineering, and software packaging mechanisms.
Experience in performance or security engineering.
