A Barista is a skilled professional who specializes in preparing and serving coffee-based beverages and other hot and cold drinks. More than just an order-taker, a Barista is an artist, a technician, and a hospitality expert who creates a welcoming experience for customers. They are the face of the coffee shop and play a crucial role in building customer loyalty.
**Key Responsibilities**
**1. Beverage Preparation (The Core Skill)**:
- **Espresso Crafting**: Expertly operating an espresso machine to pull perfect shots of espresso, ensuring proper grind size, dose, and extraction time.
- **Milk Texturing**: Steaming and frothing milk to the correct temperature and consistency for various drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos.
- **Latte Art**: Pouring steamed milk into espresso to create decorative designs (e.g., rosettas, hearts, tulips), which is a hallmark of skill.
- **Recipe Adherence**: Preparing all beverages according to established recipes and customer specifications (e.g., extra shot, non-fat milk, sugar-free syrup, half-caff).
- **Other Beverages**: Brewing batch coffee, preparing teas, blended frappés, hot chocolate, and other specialty drinks.
**2. Customer Service & Engagement**:
- **Greeting and Connecting**: Warmly welcoming customers, making eye contact, and engaging in friendly conversation.
- **Taking Orders**: Accurately taking customer orders, answering questions about the menu, and offering recommendations or upselling items (e.g., pastries, specialty drinks).
- **Handling Special Requests**: Patiently and accurately accommodating customizations and dietary restrictions.
- **Resolving Issues**: Politely and professionally handling customer complaints or problems with an order.
- **Building Community**: Remembering regular customers' names and usual orders to foster a sense of community.
**3. Operational Duties**:
- **Cash Handling**: Operating a cash register or point-of-sale (POS) system, processing cash, credit, and mobile payments, and providing correct change/receipts.
- **Cleaning & Sanitation**: Maintaining a clean and organized workspace throughout the shift. This includes wiping counters, sweeping floors, cleaning equipment, and emptying trash.
- **Stocking & Restocking**: Monitoring inventory levels of cups, lids, syrups, milk, and beans; restocking items as needed during the shift.
- **Equipment Maintenance**: Performing basic cleaning and maintenance on coffee grinders, espresso machines, and brewers (e.g., backflushing the espresso machine, cleaning the steam wand).
**4. Team Collaboration**:
- Communicating effectively with team members during rushes.
- Assisting with opening and closing procedures.
- Helping to train new team members.
