Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
**Main purpose of job**:
This is an exciting opportunity to work on improving bilateral trade and investment between the United Kingdom and Brazil. The jobholder for this position will be key to the success of the UK’s trade policy and market access objectives.

Working as part of the Trade and Economics Team, the job holder will be responsible for supporting across the trade agenda, including future trade agreements; multilateral cooperation including WTO; regulatory and market access issues in Brazil and the wider Latin America and Caribbean (LATAC) region.

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) in a key role, given the significance of trade policy and market access to HMG’s prosperity agenda. DIT and the FCDO are working closely together on trade policy to deliver HMG’s international trade and investment strategy to promote British trade and investment across the world. Latin America & the Caribbean (LATAC), and Brazil in particular, is an important trading partner for the UK and there is real potential to grow our trade and investment relationship with this region over the coming years. This is a great opportunity to be part of an international team that contributes to a high profile agenda in which Ministers are closely engaged.

**Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?**:
**Trade policy (50%)**
- Support the Trade and Economics team as well as DIT sector leads in all things trade policy, acting as an advisor on a range of different topics relevant to the UK’s trade policy priorities in Brazil. This includes informing strategies to engage Brazilian authorities and businesses.
- Providing trade and economic analysis and report on significant international trade issues in Brazil (including gathering information and presenting it in written and graphic format).
- Work on technical matters like SPS standards, regulatory compliance issues, customs & duties and international trade agreements.
- Be the main point of contact between the DIT Sector Teams and the Trade and Economics Team on trade policy and market access issues.
- Lead on briefings for external engagement and ministerial visits.
**Market Access (30%)**
- Support DIT sector leads on Market Access plans. This includes ensuring sector teams have well mapped tariff and non-tariff barriers, clearly defined policy objectives and engagement strategies.
- Support teams in their efforts to prioritise the most realistic and impactful market access barriers, as well as in designing the best strategies to address them. Implementation of these strategies is often under the responsibility of sector teams, but the job holder may be responsible for taking forward some of the agreed actions.
- On a regular basis, communicate on progress for the priority barriers to the regional Market access team as well as to London colleagues.
- In collaboration with sector-focussed teams, build a strong network and relationships with key government and industry stakeholders, including ministries, regulatory agencies, Congress and industry/trade associations to help resolve market access barriers.
- Work collaboratively with other teams inside the British Government, including the Prosperity, Political and Science & Innovation teams to identify synergies and boost commercial outcomes from resolving market access barriers.
- Support teams in understanding the Market Access agenda, by delivering L&D sessions on Market access, on an ad hoc basis, as requested by teams or when a need is identified.
- Act as a the central point of contact between the DIT Regional Market Access Team (and HQ), and Brazil sector leads.
**Market Access Regional support (20%)**
- Support the Mercosur Trade Policy lead (based in Brasilia) on Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay priority barriers, working closely with colleagues in those markets. Advising on Market Access strategies and supporting in communicating progress and/or challenges.
- Act as the central point of contact between the regional Market Access team and these markets (Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay), liaising with local colleagues; feeding in priorities and advising on Trade Dialogues and Trade Policy engagements.
- Contribute to regional projects when needed (ad hoc basis).

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

**Language requirements**:
**Language: Portuguese and English**
**Level of language required: Fluent**

**Essential on arrival**:

- At least 5 years work experience in Governmental Relations, international trade or on trade policy.
- Experience working with the Brazilian government.
- The jobholder for this position will need to deliver through others and overcome obstacles. You will need strong communication skills and a high level of emotional intelligence that will allow you to advise different teams appropriately and pitch key pr
