Core Responsibilities and Duties A barista's daily tasks can be broken down into several key areas: 1. Beverage Preparation: - Espresso Extraction: Expertly operating an espresso machine to pull perfect shots of espresso, ensuring correct grind size, dose, and extraction time. - Milk Texturing: Steaming and frothing milk to the correct temperature and microfoam consistency for drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites. - Drink Crafting: Preparing a wide variety of beverages, from simple drip coffee and Americanos to more complex specialty drinks, teas, and sometimes blended or cold-brew beverages. - Latte Art: Pouring textured milk into espresso to create decorative patterns (like rosettas, hearts, or tulips) on the surface of the drink, demonstrating skill and attention to detail. 2. Customer Service and Interaction: - Greeting and Engaging: Welcoming customers warmly, taking orders, and answering questions about the menu. - Education: Advising customers on different coffee origins, roast profiles, and brewing methods to help them make a choice. - Order Management: Handling cash and card transactions, often using a Point of Sale (POS) system. - Building Community: Creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, remembering regular customers' names and usual orders. 3. Maintenance and Cleanliness: - Equipment Care: Regularly cleaning and maintaining espresso machines, grinders, and brewers to ensure they function perfectly and produce quality coffee. - Workspace Organization: Keeping the bar area clean, organized, and well-stocked with cups, lids, syrups, and milk. - Health and Safety: Adhering to all food safety and sanitation guidelines, including proper handwashing and safe food handling. 4. Inventory and Stock Management: - Restocking: Replenishing coffee beans, milk, syrups, and other supplies as needed. - Rotation: Using older products first (FIFO - First In, First Out) to ensure freshness and minimize waste. - Quality Control: Checking the freshness of milk and other perishable ingredients.
