Job Details:
We are seeking a Principal Backend Engineer to lead the design and development of our core platform services and integrations. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, systems-level thinking, and experience leading complex backend initiatives. This role is hands-on and strategic, guiding architectural decisions while mentoring engineers across the backend team.
As a principal engineer, you will influence platform design, scalability, reliability, and security at a company-wide level, working closely with product, data, and operations teams to deliver mission-critical functionality.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and reliable backend platform services and APIs.
* Define architectural standards and best practices for backend services and integrations across the company.
* Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to translate complex requirements into elegant technical solutions.
* Mentor and guide backend engineers, sharing technical expertise and promoting engineering excellence.
* Build and maintain robust integrations with third-party systems, ensuring seamless data exchange and operational reliability.
* Identify and drive performance optimization, scalability improvements, and platform enhancements.
* Implement advanced monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions to maintain high system availability.
* Influence technical strategy and participate in cross-functional architectural decisions.
* Experience with HL7/FHIR and healthcare interoperability standards is a strong plus.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
* 8+ years of backend development experience, with expertise in designing platform services and complex integrations.
* Deep proficiency in Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, MongoDB, SQL/noSQL, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
* Strong systems thinking and experience leading technical architecture for complex domains.
* Proven ability to mentor and guide engineering teams, setting high technical standards.
* Experience working in complex domains, ideally U.S. Healthcare.
* English fluency required.
* Previous experience working at Nubank or a similar fintech is highly desirable.
