Scope of Job

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as Assistant Director of Bands (non-tenure track) position. This Lecturer I position is a three-year appointment position renewable upon successful periodic performance evaluations and budget availability. This is a nine-month position during the academic year, with an expectation of an additional two months of employment during the summer. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentoring of students in outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will be strong recruiters capable of broadening participation among members of under-represented groups and will provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including but not exclusive to UTRGV campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Director of Bands will be responsible for assisting the Director of Athletic Bands in leading the Vaquero Marching Band and administrating all UTRGV Athletic Pep Bands, including the volleyball and basketball pep bands, while maintaining close collaboration with UTRGV Athletics. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Director of Athletic Bands, Director of Bands, and the School of Music faculty and will be responsible for, in collaboration with the Director of Bands, administrating and conducting all concert bands as assigned, including the Symphonic Winds on the Brownsville campus, and teaching additional courses based on the candidate's strengths and department needs. The successful candidate will also be expected to recruit undergraduate and graduate students for both main campuses and cultivate positive, collaborative relationships with faculty, university administration, and band alumni. The Assistant Director of Bands will assist the Director of Athletic Bands in supporting a student leadership cohort in the Marching Band Organization, organizing student data, alumni engagement, equipment logistics, and fundraising. Assist in administrative tasks over an 11-month calendar focused on student recruitment, hiring of instructional staff, show development, and coordinating performance schedules. Work alongside UTRGV Athletics, Marketing, and Operations to coordinate pep band logistics, assist with football game day logistics, and other event planning as it relates to alumni and prospective student programs. Develop and engage in systematic recruitment activities that include but are not limited to off-campus high school visits, on-campus clinics, and workshops for area high school directors and students, as well as conducting any honors and all-state festivals. The Assistant Director of Bands will regularly participate in audition placements for concert ensembles and work directly with university offices (Centers for Students with Disabilities, Community Standards, Dean of Students) to advance initiatives of student welfare and accessibility.


Minimum Qualifications

* Earned master's degree in a relevant field of music by date of appointment.
* Documented experience and accomplishments with collegiate marching and athletic bands.
* The ability to contribute through teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.


Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

* Experience with providing year-round administrative leadership to an athletic band program that includes student recruiting, hiring of instructional support staff, creative show development, selecting musical repertoire, coordinating early housing arrival, and developing performance schedules.
* Familiarity with Drill Writing and Music Writing software. Experience with developing and implementing systematic recruitment activities that include but are not limited to off-campus high school visitations, on-campus clinics, and workshops for area high school directors and students, and/or conducting at honors festivals.
* Demonstrated success in wind band conducting.


Preferred Qualifications

* Doctorate of Musical Arts from an accredited university.
* Experience teaching Concert and Athletic bands at the secondary level.
* Experience as a collaborator with athletic, marketing, and operation departments to coordinate game-day logistics, stadium/fieldhouse access, and event planning.
* Marching Band Show Design Experience

License or Certification Required? No

Salary: A nine-month based salary commensurate with Qualifications and Experience and an additional summer stipend to be determined for student workshops/recruitment.

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
