Job Summary
The IS team supports and maintains Canonical’s IT production services, running services for over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & GitOps engineer you will drive operations automation in private and public clouds using IaC, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical’s leading automation products. You will also provide critical feedback on open‑source technologies through bug reports, pull requests, and design collaboration.
Responsibilities
Lead the development of automation and GitOps in the team as an embedded tech lead.
Collaborate closely with the IS architect to align solutions with the IS architecture vision.
Design and architect services that IS can offer the organization as products.
Apply IaC expertise to advance automation practices within IS.
Automate software operations for re‑usability and consistency across private and public clouds, considering distributed systems complexity.
Maintain operational responsibility for Canonical’s core services, networks, and infrastructure.
Develop skills in troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance investigation.
Set up, maintain, and use observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch; design and maintain monitoring and alerting.
Assist and work with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support peers.
Enjoy uninterrupted development time for larger projects and automation of manual tasks.
Share experience, best practices, and mentorship with team members.
Carry final responsibility for time‑critical escalations.
Qualifications
Modern view on hosting architecture driven by IaC across private and public clouds.
Product mindset focused on developing products rather than solutions.
Python software development experience in large projects.
Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems.
Proven exposure to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure with code.
Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
Affinity with Linux storage (Ceph, databases, etc.).
Hands‑on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
Bachelor’s degree or greater in computer science or related engineering field.
Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
Motivation to troubleshoot across all layers, from kernel to web.
Willingness to learn quickly and adapt to fast‑changing environments.
Comfortable working within distributed teams.
Passion for open‑source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
