The Impact You’ll Make in this Role 3M is seeking a Governance Lead (Senior Data Engineering Specialist) to join the Corporate Research Digital Platforms (CRDP) team to lead and scale enterprise data governance across the OnePlace platform. This role combines hands-on data engineering expertise with leadership in governance, metadata management, and data stewardship. As a Governance Lead, you will have the opportunity to shape and scale governance as a core capability of the enterprise data mesh: Lead the design and implementation of enterprise data governance using Databricks Unity Catalog as the core governance layer. Define and enforce data access models, policies, and standards aligned with enterprise security, privacy, and compliance requirements. Drive adoption of DataHub for metadata management, data discovery, lineage, and data product visibility. Establish and scale a data stewardship operating model, including domain ownership, accountability, and governance processes. Implement computational governance by embedding policy enforcement, data quality checks, lineage tracking, and access controls directly into data pipelines and workflows. Define and operationalize standards for data classification, quality, lineage, and lifecycle management across all data assets. Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data products aligned with governance standards using modern lakehouse architectures (e.g., Databricks, Spark). Develop and support data models, ingestion frameworks, and transformation workflows, ensuring governance controls are programmatically enforced. Integrate governance into automated platform workflows (e.g., Temporal.io), CI/CD, and data product lifecycle management. Collaborate with platform, cloud, and domain teams to support onboarding, catalog/schema design, and adoption of best practices across both data engineering and governance. Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or related field from an accredited university. Proven experience in data governance, data management, and data engineering within modern data platforms. Strong experience with metadata management and data cataloging. Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python/PySpark (or similar distributed processing frameworks). Experience building data pipelines, APIs, and data integration workflows in cloud environments. Deep understanding of data security principles, including access control, encryption, authentication, and authorization. Experience working with structured and unstructured data across enterprise use cases.Intermediate English Proficiency Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include: Experience designing governance within a data mesh architecture. Proficiency with AWS and Databricks lakehouse architecture (Delta Lake, MLflow, Workflows, etc.). Experience integrating governance into automated workflows (Temporal.io, Airflow, etc.). Strong understanding of data lineage, data quality frameworks, and observability tools. Experience with streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis, Spark Streaming). Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and API-based architectures. Experience with data visualization and analytics tools (Tableau, Power BI, Dash). Strong experience defining and operationalizing data stewardship programs. Excellent communication and leadership skills to influence cross-functional, matrixed teams. Experience implementing governance across multi-account or multi-region cloud environments.
